As a doctor and professor, you, Kevin Cahill, are a civic leader who has devoted yourself to inspiring others to become involved in humanitarian issues. As president of the Center for International Health and Cooperation, you have promoted healing and peace in countries shattered by war, regional conflicts, and ethnic violence.
Upon completing your medical degree in 1961, you were awarded a grant to work in Calcutta alongside Mother Theresa. You served in Egypt, Sudan, with the U.S. Navy as director of clinical tropical medicine, and you continued active medical research for forty years in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Since the mid-1970s you have held public positions at the city and state level. You served as the special assistant to the governor for health affairs, chairman of the Health Planning Commission, and chairman of the Health Research Council of New York State. From 1981 to 1993 you were a senior member of the New York City Board of Health. Having written and edited 29 books and more than 200 articles, you have contributed greatly to public knowledge on wide-ranging topics, including tropical medicine, humanitarian and foreign affairs, Irish literature, and public health.
A devoted educator and physician, you have appointments currently as university professor and director of The Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University; director of the Tropical Disease Center at Lenox Hill Hospital; clinical professor of tropical medicine and molecular parasitology at New York University School of Medicine; chief medical adviser for counterterrorism, New York City Police Department; professor of international health and tropical medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland; senior consultant to the United Nations Health Service and President-General of the American-Irish Historical Society.
An avid scholar, you earned degrees from Fordham University, Cornell University School of Medicine, the Royal College of Surgeons in England and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. You have received numerous fellowships and distinguished awards.
