Complementary Degree Programs

Bachelor of Arts in Biology
This course of study will prepare the student for a nonscientific career that may require significant background in the biological sciences. This could include science education at the primary or secondary school level, scientific and environmental journalism and certain legal areas, such as environmental and patent law. It provides for a greater liberal arts background and the opportunity to take more elective courses than does the traditional BS program. Students may choose biology as a major or a minor.

Bachelor of Arts in Adolescent Education
Students preparing to teach in secondary school settings (junior high schools, middle schools, or high schools) complete an arts and science major in the specialty field they wish to teach (from the Pace's Dyson College of Arts and Sciences). These students also complete an adolescent education major with the School of Education. Specialty fields that are environmentally related are as follows: major in biology, major in chemistry, major in earth science, and major in physics.

Bachelor of Arts in Childhood Education
Students preparing to teach children in elementary schools or preschool setting major in Childhood Education. Childhood Education majors also complete a concentration in a specific area (in Pace's Dyson College of Arts and Sciences). Concentrations that are environmentally related are as follow: concentration in biology or concentration in earth science.

Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry
The BS in biochemistry, in addition to fundamental chemistry, biology, physics, and math courses, includes studies in the biochemical areas of amino acids and proteins, enzymes, metabolism, nucleic acids, immunology, viruses, and recombinant technology. The initial courses offer an overview of the field of biochemistry. Advanced courses, which include advanced biochemistry lectures and advanced biochemistry laboratory provide more depth, moving the student toward the graduate level in biochemistry. Throughout this course of study, there is strong emphasis on research in laboratory experiments.

Bachelor of Science in Biology
This course of study will prepare students to further education in scientific graduate school programs and for professional schools, such as medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine, or for employment in the medical, biotechnological, or environmental fields. In addition to the track in environmental biology, biology majors have the option of specializing in one of the following academic tracks.

  • Track in General Biology
    This track provides a broad study plan that covers various areas of the biological sciences, including physiology, ecology, botany, genetics, and microbiology.
  • Track in Molecular and Cellular Biology
    This track emphasizes study of the biochemistry of cellular structure and function and the technologies involved in the investigation of molecular processes within cells.
  • Track in Toxicology
    This track emphasizes study of the manner by which environmental chemicals, whether released from human activities or from natural sources, impact upon biological systems, including humans.

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
