It's not too late to register for the 13th Annual Securities Industry Conference on October 19, which has become a must-attend event in the industry. The theme is "Globalization of Exchanges and Securities Firms: Winners and Losers" and will feature Chester Spatt, chief economist of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and Gerald D. Putnam, president & co-COO, NYSE Group, Inc. The conference is being produced in conjunction with The Wall Street Journal and featured journalists include Paul Gigot and Paul Steiger.

2006 Nobel Economics Winner at Pace
Edmund Phelps, PhD, McVickar Professor of Political Economy and director of the Earth Institute's Center on Capitalism and Society at Columbia University, was featured at the Seventh Annual Henry George Symposium at Pace's downtown New York City campus on Tuesday, October 3. With the provocative title "Catchups and Fallbacks: Gaining and Losing Ground Since World War II," Phelps' lecture was an informative macroeconomic overview of global successes and failures. Phelps just won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on the relationship between unemployment and inflation.

Distinguished Harvard Scholar to Lubin
J. Richard Hackman
Distinguished Harvard Scholar to Lecture at Lubin
Edgar Pierce Professor of Social and Organizational Psychology, J. Richard Hackman, Harvard University, will be the first guest speaker at the fall 2006 Lubin Leaders and Scholars Lecture Series. On Monday, November 6, 2006, Professor Hackman will speak on team dynamics and other subjects at the Pace downtown New York City campus. His book, Leading Teams, was deemed the best book in management for 2004 by the Academy of Management.

Financial Crimes Meet Savvy Students
What does Pace have to do with a business owner skimming from his company, a bar owner keeping a second set of books, an identity theft scheme, a drug trafficker, a constitutionally challenged "non taxpayer," and a race track pari-mutuel teller kickback scheme? These are some of the hypothetical noir situations that will be faced by 26 students from Pace University and Queens College when they become honorary IRS "Special Agents for a Day" in a unique one-day program organized by the New York Field Office Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service.

  Enron Expert to Visit Lubin
Bethany McClean, senior writer for Fortune, is coauthor of The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron and she appeared in the documentary of the same name. Both the book and the documentary flow from her 2001 breaking story on the Enron collapse resulting from ethical and legal breaches, which shook boardrooms across corporate America. McLean will lecture on "The Enron Case: What It Means for Corporate Ethics and Governance." The event will take place at the downtown New York City campus in the Schimmel Center for the Arts on November 14.

Executive Summit a Huge Success
Senior executives and media moguls joined with leading academicians on September 15 to provide a cutting-edge perspective on 21st century marketing at the first annual industry conference "Executive Summit: Marketing and Technology – The Next Frontier." Event attendees and speakers came from across the United States and as far away as Ireland to participate in what is now planned to be an annual conference because of its overwhelming success. The event was hosted by Lubin's marketing department and sponsored by Adweek, McGraw Hill, MENG, and Pace University.

Aftershock Conference a Big Success Economic Imprint of 9-11 Examined
Five years after September 11, Pace hosted the Aftershock Conference to examine the economic, cultural, environmental, educational, and political consequences of the day that changed everything. Lubin's dean, Joe Baczko, moderated a panel on "Economic Impact: Global Business Community." The panelists shared a sense of optimism and growth in spite of the continued threat of terrorism.

Goldman Sachs organized a wine tasting for their Pace University alumni employees. Dean Joe Baczko and some faculty and staff were in attendance. The wine tasting was held this summer and gave everyone present the opportunity to reconnect and learn what's new at Pace, which has over 200 alumni employed at the company. Shal Chowdhury '03, Associate, Equities Division, arranged for the wine tasting at the company.

The Third Annual Pace Pitch Contest is coming up on Friday, November 17, 2006. Based on the elevator pitch concept popular among venture capitalists, the contest pits would-be entrepreneurs against each other for three-minute pitches of their ideas, business models, marketing strategies, etc., which are delivered to potential investors (a distinguished panel of judges) in front of an enthusiastic audience. The title sponsor will again be JPMorgan Chase. This year's keynote speaker will be Steve Hindy, co-founder and president of The Brooklyn Brewery.

Pace's Executive MBA Cycle 7 Begins
The seventh annual class of Lubin eMBA students began their 23-month course of study with a seven-day Orientation Residency in August at the Downtown Conference Center at Pace University's downtown New York City campus. Pace is considered a pioneer in Executive MBA education, having started the third program in the U.S. in 1969. The current eMBA format began in May 2000 and was touted by AACSB International in their review team's report as "highly innovative, ahead of its time, and unique in the marketplace."

Lubin Introduces Innovative Problem-Based MBA Cohort
Building on the success of the eMBA format, this fall Lubin is offering a select group of full-time MBA students a unique opportunity to study business with a problem-based curriculum that uses interdisciplinary modules to team teach fundamental knowledge and tools in the process of solving complex business problems. All five modules of the new core MBA are team taught. The student/faculty ratio in the program of eight to one is a big hit with students, who give the program rave reviews.

3rd Annual MBA/MS Career Fair
The University's Career Services Office and the Lubin Graduate Society (LGS) are gearing up for the 3rd Annual MBA/MS Career Fair. The fair is scheduled for November 8 on Pace's downtown New York City campus and serves as a resource for all Lubin MBA/MS students interested in exploring job prospects. Last year's fair was a huge success, as 60 employers participated and feedback from employers and students was great. Companies confirmed at this time include, among others, Associated Press, Morgan Stanley, Prudential Financial Services and UBS. Bring plenty of resumes!

In January 2007, Lubin undergraduate students will have an exciting opportunity to visit Brussels and London as part of a field study course through the School's Center for International Business Development (CIBD). The CIBD is also offering a new course that involves a field trip to Mumbai and Bangalore, India, also in January. This October, the CIBD is hosting a group of 35 executives from Lingnan (University) College, China, for a series of academic lectures. While in New York City, the Center has arranged for the group to visit the NYSE, among other company visits.

New Director of Development and Alumni Relations
Magdalena Rybicki recently joined the staff of the Lubin School of Business and will serve as the School's director of Development and Alumni Relations. She was first hired by Pace in 2005 as the University's major gifts officer in the Office of Philanthropy. In her new position, she will work closely with the dean of the Lubin School in enhancing alumni relations, strengthening ties with the corporate community, and increasing support for student scholarships and faculty development. A native of Chicago, Magda earned her BS from Loyola University - Chicago and her MSSA from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

At the Fourth Annual Joseph I. Lubin Junior Recognition Reception on Tuesday, October 17, on the Pace downtown New York City campus and on October 24 in Pleasantville, juniors in good academic standing will be recognized for their achievements. Juniors will have an opportunity to network with their peers, seniors, alumni, and university-wide administrators while learning more about the opportunities that await them as upper division Lubin students.
