Just Dance (NYC)
Two nights of exquisite flamenco; three nights of fusing breakdancing and ballet. The Pace Presents season continues with La Curva and RUBBERBANDance Group at the Schimmel.
La Curva Israel Galván
March 13, 7:30 p.m. | March 14, 7:30 p.m.
Exquisitely innovative Flamenco dancer Israel Galván presents the New York debut of La Curva, an exploration of the vibrations created in an empty space, as part of the NY Flamenco Festival, on March 13 and 14 in the Schimmel Theatre on the NYC Campus.
Recently called a “genius” by The Guardian, Galván is well known in dance circles for his intricate and intriguing contemporary works that are deeply rooted in traditional Flamenco, using every surface of the stage and his own body as an auditory accessory alongside an ensemble of vocals (by Ines Bacan flamenco "cante jondo" singer), piano (played and composed by Brooklyn-based contemporary musician Sylvie Courvoisier), and the rhythmic beats of Bobote's "palmas" and "compas."
“...La Curva... is a joyous, witty collision of sound and image, made riveting by Galván himself. With his long legs and fiercely carved profile, he’s a master of traditional flamenco; but his mercurial body also flickers through skidding cartoon comedy, ballerina delicacy, and exotic stillness. He possesses an almost preternatural poise, yet some of his movements are so fast you can hear the whiplash displacement of air.“—The Guardian
March 20, 7:30 p.m. | March 21, 7:30 p.m. | March 22, 7:30 p.m.
Recognized internationally for its unique ability to fuse breakdancing, ballet, and modern dance into a spectacular showcase, Montréal-based RUBBERBANDance Group will present its New York debut on March 20–22 in the Schimmel Theatre.
Founder Victor Quijada reconciles his opposing dance worlds and their aesthetics: the spontaneity, fearlessness, and risk-taking of his younger years in hip-hop culture and the refinement and choreographic maturity of the ballet and contemporary works he immersed himself in as a professional dancer. Beating with the fresh pulse of street attitude and an acute understanding of theatrical staging, his work explores human relationships by harnessing the ardour of obsession, the shock of violence, and the delicate nature of tenderness, comedy, and tragedy with a great deal of honesty and courage. Don’t miss this incredible group!
“Forever young in body and mind, RUBBERBANDance brings exploration and community to the forefront in this spellbinding new work.”–Bachtrack
