Math Jump-Start FAQ
What is MATH JUMP-START?
Math Jump-Start is a free, six-week program designed to help boost your math placement score, while reinforcing math skills and competency. Successful completion of the program will decrease the overall number of mathematics courses for your intended major.
Why was I made aware of the math jump-start program?
Math Jump-Start is designed to help first year students lay a solid academic foundation in their math and/or science courses, while keeping them on track to graduate in four years. There is no obligation to participate, but we highly recommended it!
Who is eligible to participate in math jump-start?
First year student’s eligibility is based on their math placement exam score and selected major. The math placement test must be taken by June 1, 2017 and can be found on the Orientation Placement Testing Website.
What are the dates of participation?
Math Jump-Start classes take place from July 5, 2017 to August 17, 2017
Where does the program take place?
In New York City classes are taken online or in-person, and in Pleasantville classes are taken online only. The New York City in-person courses take place on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 10:05 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. and 1:20 p.m. – 2:40 p.m. The exact classroom location will be sent to you at a later date. (Please Note: New York City students are responsible for their own transportation/accommodations if taking the course in-person. Pace is not able to provide temporary housing or an early move-in for this program.)
How is math jump-start taught online?
Pace University utilizes the Blackboard platform for all online courses, and Math Jump-Start is no different! Familiarize yourself with Blackboard’s features by checking out their Student Help videos.
What technology will I need for the program?
It’s easiest to navigate Blackboard and Math Jump-Start from a laptop or desktop computer with internet connection and audio capabilities. An iPad or tablet can be used, but you may encounter some technical issues. A mobile device is not recommended for primary program use.
What browser should I use?
Firefox is the only officially supported browser for Blackboard, utilizing Chrome, Internet Explorer, or another browser may cause issues. You can download Firefox here for free.
What if I need extra help / support?
During the program, students will be able to ask for help and support from both the Professor and Teacher’s Assistant through the Blackboard discussion board, email, and if needed, one-on-one online sessions.
What happens if I successfully complete the program?
If you successful complete the Math Jump-Start program, your advisors will be notified and your class schedule will be updated based on completion and next steps.
