Westchester Administrative Staff Council
Butcher Suite, Kessel Student Center
March 4, 2011

The meeting was called to order at 9:10 am by Karen DeSantis, secretary of the council.  Pat Carolan is sorry she is not here but she is at a meeting for the Provost Search Committee in New York City for the day.  Karen quickly showed the new Council webpage and Blog which are now live on the University site.

Karen introduced Tom Torello, Vice President of University Relations.

Tom mentioned that one of his departments was in charge of the Drupal launch and he was happy to hear that the new content management system for creating web pages is easier than previous programs.

Departments that Tom oversees include:

  • Marketing and Communications which focus on Strategic marketing and Planning
  • Public Information
  • Special Events which has been very busy with the R25 events.pace.edu program over the past year or so.

Questions focused on Institutional Branding, How to get information out to the Pace community such as newsletters, Where to get training in Drupal.

There was a discussion about the image of our students in the community.  In particular, there have been some editorials that included negative images.  There have also been many press releases and articles done that are promoting the volunteerism and good name of our students and all the work the football players have been doing in the community as well.

Karen thank Tom for his presentation and then introduced Bill McGrath, Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer.

Bill gave an update on Westchester Master Plan process.  He showed a new layout for where the new dorms will be built.  The University is closing on the purchase of the Vineyard property behind Dyson Hall.  There are now plans to expand Kessel Student Center and a new Welcome center will be on the hill behind Mortola Library.  There will be a new field house at the end of the football field.  The 160 staff in Briarcliff will most likely be moved to North Hall.

The process will go into the Regulatoryphase in May or June which is expected to take 24 months.

Questions:

What is the plan with the Graduate Center?  At this point we are still waiting to see if the new marketing is to result in better usage of the building.

What is the process for snow closing decisions?  There is a 5:30 am conference call in which all members have weather data.  Decisions need to be made early so that informaiton can be sent out by 6 am.  Unfortunately some times the weather does not follow the particular data that is available at the time.
