Like many students, Avni Kumar ’14 chose Pace because of the University’s highly regarded Lubin School of Business. But exactly what she would focus on became clear to her through a course her sophomore year. 

“I knew that Pace was well known for their business programs,” she says. “Through the Exploring Careers and Majors course [offered through the Advising Center for Exploring Majors], people from different departments came to speak about majors. That’s when I first heard about HR and because of that course I was introduced to something I’m now really passionate about.”

Selecting a BBA in Business Management with a concentration in Human Resources, Kumar hit the ground running, immediately connecting with Pace’s Career Services program, taking their online webinar and learning valuable skills in their interview workshop, before being assigned to her adviser, Senior Career Counselor Justin Krass.

“Justin is a great adviser. He helped me prepare for interviews, revamp my resume, and update it constantly,” she says. “Career Services was a huge part of me starting off my internships with DeedCast and Sony Corp.”

It was at one of Career Services’ semi-annual job and internship fairs, which attract more than 150 employers to campus to recruit Pace students and alumni, where Kumar met the co-founder of DeedCast, a NYC-based startup aimed at reducing the hassle and expense of residential real estate transactions.

“They didn’t have an HR department. I gave him my resume and talked to him about how passionate I am about HR,” she says.

Impressed by Kumar’s passion for people, she was hired as a talent acquisition intern, where she assisted in the hiring and recruitment process, attending career fairs at universities, conducting interviews and improving online job descriptions, and ultimately helped grow the company.

Seven months later, Kumar started an internship with Sony Corp., another internship she obtained through Pace’s Career Services. As a human resource intern, Kumar was able to touch upon all the aspects of HR and even helped identify candidates for full-time positions, as well as blogged about her internship experience for Sony.

“Prior to my internships, I had no experience and not much knowledge about HR,” she says. “I have learned about performance management, benefits, compensation, immigration, recruiting, and a little bit of training and development."

Kumar also spent the spring 2014 interning at sister Sony Music as a talent acquisition intern, where she assisted with on-boarding and orientations, screened candidates and conducted phone interviews for interns, performed reference checks, assisted with training and development courses, and more. Through a connection with Career Services’ Assistant Director Barry Miller, she also interned at Revlon, in their human resources department, reviewing and organizing contracts, creating job postings, scheduling phone interviews and observing on-site interviews, screening more than 1,000 resumes, and more.

“I would really recommend students to sign up for Career Services, take their courses, and contact their advisers constantly. They have connections and experience in the real world. This is a great opportunity we have as Pace students—take it. Don’t take anything for granted. You will definitely land a great internship through Career Services.”

Kumar also served as the secretary for the Human Resources Management Club, the social networking team coordinator for the National Society of Leadership and Success, where she helped guide students to achieve their goals and create a club to spread awareness about HR, and still found time for community service. In spring 2014, Pace awarded Kumar a Lubin Student Leader Certificate and a Career Services Award at Commencement.

“[The internships] have been a great help—they helped me build a strong background, learn about all the different aspects of HR and how they link to the whole company,” she says. “Thanks to Pace and the HR department, I now know what my passion is and what kind of future I want to strive for.”
