Concierge to Pace Students

News Story

As the saying goes: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and with the start of the new school year fast approaching, the Office for Student Success wants you to know how you can positively impact student success and retention.

The Office for Student Success (OSS) is a one-stop-shop for troubleshooting challenges students face, identifying opportunities for student advancement and support, as well as a guide to the institution as a whole. Sound sort of abstract? It doesn’t need to be. Think of OSS as a concierge to all of Pace’s academic and administrative departments—they can point students in the right direction, evaluate their progress, and help them to navigate and take advantage of resources at the University.

For Lauren Carter ’16, coming back to school was a priority; however she had to quit a job where she was making decent money to realize her dream. After a financial aid error, Carter realized that she wasn’t able to afford continuing her studies at Pace. That’s when her academic adviser referred her to the Office for Student Success.

“I didn’t think I was going to be able to stay. I said ‘I don’t know how I’m going to do this. It looks like I’m going to have to transfer.’ My adviser said ‘Try Jenny Ko [Associate Director for the Office for Student Success], you have great grades. Pace should be able to accommodate you, assist you.’ I met with Jenny and she did just that. She interviewed me, talked to me about my major, career goals, GPA, and financial assistance,” explains Carter. “I was able to get endowed scholarships and keep them as long as I maintain my GPA. I was able to go to the annual alumni scholarship awards dinner and even meet with one of my donors to thank him for the support.”

OSS, which works hand-in-hand with many constituencies, bringing resources together for Pace students so that they are empowered to make the most of their education, welcomes collaboration with faculty and staff on initiatives and projects, working toward the betterment of the student experience. Faculty and staff are able to engage with students, make referrals to OSS, and create lasting connections with students who might otherwise leave the University.

Since working with Jenny Ko and the Office for Student Success, Carter has taken what she learned from her experience and is now working in partnership with OSS to give back to the Pace Community.

“I’m starting an organization—Black T.I.E.—to help mitigate issues around minority retention. There’s a dramatic disparity between overall retention rates and the retention rates of minorities,” she says. “We want to increase student engagement and increase the positive experiences they have. We’re going to help on the professional side—seeking out internships opportunities and so on.”
