More than a Cro(a)ckpot: The Influence of Edward Atkinson

Mark Twain called Edward Atkinson's influence "as near ranking as authority as can the opinion of any individual in the Union." Yet, his role in much of the late 19th and early 20th centuries has become nearly invisible. Based on her archival research, Environmental Studies and Science Professor and Chair Melanie DuPuis, PhD, will show how Atkinson had an essential role in the creation of cheap labor systems in the US, both in agriculture and wage labor. His invention of the "Aladdin Cooker" (an early version of the Crockpot) represented the emergence of cheap food policies as a response to worker wage unrest.
