The Results Are In: Pawscars 2018

We asked and you answered! Here are the results of the 2018 Pawscars, which brings you the best of the best on Pace’s NYC and PLV campuses. The answers might surprise you!

New York City Campus 

Best Place to Eat Off Campus: Rosella’s Pizza
Runner-up: Chick-fil-A
Garlic knots and marinara galore at this William Street favorite. Best news: they accept Flex Dollars.

Best Place to Eat on Campus: Starbucks
Runner-up: Café 101
We thought for sure that Café 101 would’ve been a shoo-in, but it turns out that the Starbucks’ siren song was just too strong.

Best People-Watching Spot: Spruce Street
Runner-up: Dining Hall
People-watching is a bit of an overlooked New York pastime, but on Spruce Street, the practice is alive and well.

Best Coffee Shop: Birch
Runner-up: Starbucks
Cute conversation starters, great coffee, and a wall of books to choose from make this Beekman Street coffee shop the Pace Community’s favorite. Sorry, Starbucks.

Best Park or Green Space: Central Park
Runner-up: The Highline
From Strawberry Fields to Wollman Rink, it doesn’t really get much more New York than Central Park.

Best Place to Shop: Century 21
Runner-up: The Oculus
Honorable mention: Lot Less
Survey results ran the gamut, but Century 21 won out—high-fashion with bearable price tags seem to be in with the Pace Community.

Best Place to Volunteer: New York City Rescue Mission
Runner-up: Food Bank for New York City
Did you know that Mayor de Blasio recognized Pace as one of the top three universities for volunteerism and commitment to service? Our top pick for where to volunteer: the New York City Rescue Mission, an organization that exists to provide help and hope to the hungry, homeless, and hurting people of New York City.

Favorite Place on Campus: The Honors Lounge
Runner-up: The Gym
Recently remodeled and revamped, the Honors Lounge in NYC features free coffee and tea, a full-sized fridge, new furniture, group study rooms, and so much more! No wonder it’s a favorite.

Best Building on Campus: 33 Beekman
Runner-up: 163 William Street
Standing at 34 stories tall, 33 Beekman boasts of being the world's tallest college residence. The building also sleeps 761 Pace students and has a 24-hour gym.

Best Thing About Being a Pace Student: We got a lot of submissions for this question, but here here’s just some of our survey respondents had to say:

“Being able to live in NYC!”

Favorite Faculty Member: Emily Bent
Runner-up: Mark Weinstock
Assistant Professor of Women and Gender Studies Emily Bent, PhD, is known around campus as a feminist-activist, avid world traveler, and long distance runner among many other things.

Favorite Staff Member: Jaclyn Kopel
Runner-up: Donna from Café 101
Director of the Pforzheimer Honors College in NYC, Jaclyn Kopel, EdD, is known for her close connections and steadfast support of the Honors College students. Not to mention, she puts on a pretty wicked Harry Potter movie night.

Best Pace NYC Event: Fall concert
Runner-up: Midnight Breakfast
A P.A.C.E. Board tradition, each fall the Pace stage gets graced by some of the hottest artists around. Recent performers include DNCE, Kesha, T-Pain, Ty Dolla $ign, Kanye West, and Playboi Carti.

Favorite Student Club or Org: The Pace Press
Runner-up: Her Campus
The Pace Press is a student-operated newspaper run out of Pace’s NYC Campus. Each month, they bring fresh and relevant content to the Pace Community on everything from stories receiving national media attention to sharing the scoop about Orientation preparation right here on campus.

The Best Thing About Pace That No One Knows: We got a lot of submissions for this question, but here here’s just some of our survey respondents had to say:

“There's little to no judgment from people on our campus!”

“The 16th floor of 41 Park Row is home to the office of one of the founders of the school, and it’s the most beautiful room on campus.”

“A tight community that CARES about each person and wants to see everyone grow and succeed!”

“There is always something going on no matter what time of day it is.”

“The small community in such a big city!”

Pleasantville Campus

Best Place to Eat Off Campus: Wood & Fire
Runner-up: Rocky’s Millwood Deli
Spicy soppressata, San Marzano tomatoes, homemade's no wonder this family-owned wood oven pizza restaurant has stolen the hearts of Pace’s Pleasantville community.

Best Place to Eat on Campus: Fern Dining Hall in the Kessel Student Center        
Runner-up: Pace Perk
The main dining hall on Pace’s PLV Campus won this round, but there was a very strong showing for the student-run Pace Perk, PLV’s late-night dining option.

Best People-Watching Spot: Kessel Student Center     
Runner-up: Miller Lawn
Home to a ton of offices, the dining hall, meeting spaces, and lounges, it’s no surprise that Kessel would be the hub for people-watching.

Best Coffee Shop: Dunkin Donuts
Runner-up: Black Cow Coffee Company
America runs on Dunkin and apparently, so does Pace. Iced mocha lattes, do we need to say more?

Best Park or Green Space: Right on campus
Runner-up: Rockefeller State Park Preserve
Pace’s Plesantville Campus is 200 acres of lush lawns, hiking trails, fitness paths, and so much more.

Best Place to Shop: Palisades Center Mall
Runner-up: The Westchester Mall
A short trip over the Tappan Zee Bridge makes the Palisades Center Mall a hotspot for both shopping and entertainment.

Best Place to Volunteer: SPCA Briarcliff
Runner-up: Greenberg Nature Center
In the arms of the, no. We promised ourselves we wouldn’t cry. Looks like this year’s top place to volunteer has gone to the dogs (and cats).

Favorite Place on Campus: Choate Pond
Runner-up: Mortola Library
The heart of Pace’s PLV Campus, Choate Pond is home to a variety of animals, insects, and interesting flora.

Best Building on Campus: Alumni Hall
Runner-up: Environmental Center
Alumni Hall, one of Pace’s newer residence halls, has it all—resident rooms, class rooms, faculty-in-residence, lounges for FIGs, and the Starbuck outpost.

Best Thing About Being a Pace Student: We got a lot of submissions for this question, but here here’s just some of our survey respondents had to say:

“The connections and networking opportunities that we have for students looking for internships and jobs. Also the Pleasantville campus is the best of both worlds because we have a campus to walk around and enjoy but also are arm’s distance away from the city.”

“Becoming a part of the Pace family.”

“It’s a small, tight-knit community.”

“The professors really get to know you.”

“The location! We’re actually really close to the city.”

Favorite Faculty Member: Melissa Cardon
Runner-up: Laurie McMillan
Distinguished Professor of Management and Management Science Melissa Cardon, PhD, has been called “one of the brightest stars of her generation in the field of entrepreneurship" by peers and has been a very valuable role model to students, and an influential mentor for faculty.

Favorite Staff Member: Dean Lisa
Runner-up: Rachel Carpenter
She’s a PLV mainstay! You can find Dean Lisa on campus at athletics games, during Cafeteria Karaoke, at student name it and she’ll be there.

Best Pace PLV Event: Spring Concert
Runner-up: Athletics Games
Honorable mention: Midnight Breakfast

Although it’s a new event, it’s been rated the best! This past spring’s Off the Leash concert featured big name artists like A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, DJ BlackOut, DROK, and Matt Violinist.

Favorite Student Club or Org: Delta Phi Epsilon
Runner-up: OLAS
The sisterhood is strong with this Greek org. Their mission on campus is to develop a social consciousness and a strong commitment to think and act for the greater good. Justice. Sisterhood. Love.

“The baby chicks (more so juveniles now) loved to be held and if you hold them in the right position, they fall asleep in your arms.”

“Amazing opportunities to network with people on and off-campus.”

“We are all like family!”

“Pace might not be an Ivy League school, but our university is ranked top in the country for upward mobility after graduation.”

“Pace University in Pleasantville is a hidden gem and I wish more people knew the amazing things students do on this campus.”
