Roughly 3 million students across the country will earn college degrees this spring. Just under another million will complete master’s degrees. At Pace University, where I’m president, we’re awarding about 3,700 associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, and on Monday we put on a truly wonderful series of commencement ceremonies celebrating our Class of 2023 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, the home of the U.S. Open.

"At Pace University, we’re not hidden away in an ivory tower," writes President Krislov in his April message to the community. "In fact, one of my favorite things about this University is how much we engage with the world around us."

Passionate about equal opportunity and access, Marvin Krislov has been vocal in advocating for a more inclusive and diverse educational environment. He previously headed the legal defense of University of Michigan’s admission policies that led to the U.S. Supreme Court recognizing the importance of student diversity – although the current high court may be moving in the opposite direction. Under Krislov, Pace University recently adopted the Okanagan Charter, an international framework for promoting mental health and well-being on campuses globally as part of the university’s wellness strategic plan.

It is a busy time for news at Pace University. This morning we’re announcing our speakers for Commencement 2023; yesterday we announced the formal appointment of our new Provost; and now, in the latest issue of Pace Now, we're sharing more faculty success, some amazing go-getters, and so much more.

One of the many pleasures of academic life is that we get two opportunities to restart and renew: both at the start of the academic year each September and at the start of the new calendar year each January. As we embark on this new year at Pace University, and our new Spring 2023 semester, it feels as though we’re making an especially fresh start.

Layoffs are once again making headlines.

After a period when it seemed like employers couldn’t hire fast enough — which unfortunately led some young people to forego college in favor of readily available work — things are slowing down. And, perhaps most frighteningly, layoffs are hitting even blue-chip, successful companies. Google’s parent, Alphabet, is laying off 12,00 employees. Microsoft will lay off 10,000. Amazon laid off 10,000 — and then started laying off 8,000 more. Goldman Sachs laid off 3,000; ad agencies, media companies, and even videogame makers are announcing rounds of layoffs. Who knows when the layoffs will end at Twitter.
