Biography

ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES

Dr. Andrew O. Coggins, Jr. is an internationally known cruise industry analyst. He is an annual attendee at Seatrade’s Global and Asia/ Asia Pacific Cruise Conferences. He has spoken at and served as a moderator at numerous past conferences. He is regularly contacted by the media for interviews on cruise industry and travel and tourism industry topics. Past interviews include China International Radio, MSNBC, Voice of America, WPIX-11 NYC, The New York Times, The Miami Herald, The Baltimore Sun, The Houston Chronicle, The Maritime Executive, The Los Angeles Times, The NY Post, NPR, and Bloomberg. Topics ranged from travel and tourism trends to maritime law to the Costa Concordia disaster to the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean.

In addition, Dr. Coggins is a member of several local marketing and maritime organizations where his meeting attendance has raised Lubin’s industry awareness and brought guest speakers to his classes. He is also an active member of SKAL International and Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), international travel and tourism marketing and networking organizations. Dr. Coggins is a member of the Boards of Directors the Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA) and the American Caribbean Maritime Foundation (ACMF).

Dr. Coggins is also available for consulting. Past work includes expert witness for Kirkland and Ellis Law Firm in the Vietch versus Virgin case. Dr. Coggins is currently part of a 3-person team working on “Development of a National Cruise Tourism Strategy, Policy, and Action Plan for Dominica.” Conference attendance, association meetings, media interviews, and consulting consume over 200 hours per year.
Dr. Coggins was invited to present his paper “The globalization of the cruise industry: A tale of ships,” published in Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes Volume 6/Issue 2, at the 3rd International Conference on Innovative Development of E-Commerce and Logistics (ICIDEL2017) in November 2017 in Zhengzhou, China.

Dr. Coggins is a retired U.S. Navy Commander with twenty-three plus years of service on seven ships and various diplomatic and international assignments. He is a 1985 graduate of the German Armed Forces Staff College in Hamburg, Germany. His M.S.M. was completed in 1994 at Boston University Brussels. His PhD. in Hospitality and Tourism Management was earned at Virginia Tech in 2004. His dissertation “What makes a passenger ship a legend: The future of the concept of legend in the passenger shipping industry” won the ITB 2006 Science Award for Best International Paper.

Dr. Coggins came to Lubin from the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he taught hospitality and tourism management courses from 2004 to 2010. He teaches various Management Department courses, in both New York City and Pleasantville, including Cruise Industry Management. He is also Associate Director of Lubin’s Business Honors Program.
