Kristen S. DeWire
Biography
Adjunct Professor Kristen S. DeWire teaches the Washington, D.C., Environmental Externship class. Prof. DeWire practices environmental law in Washington as Senior Counsel to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Appeals Board. Prior to joining the federal government, she was Assistant General Counsel for the Washington, D.C., Department of Energy and Environment, where her practice included administrative enforcement of environmental regulations and advising on compliance and regulatory matters. She also was an Assistant Attorney General at the Maryland Department of the Environment, where she litigated environmental enforcement cases and judicial review of water pollution control permits. Prof. DeWire’s environmental practice has spanned a range of issues, including water resources, waste management, land remediation, environmental health, and sustainability. In addition to her environmental experience, she has served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Public Advocacy Section of the Office of the District of Columbia Attorney General, and a law clerk to the Honorable Michael W. Farrell of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
Prof. DeWire is Co-chair of the Standing Committee on Administrative Law for the D.C. Bar Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Community, and a co-author of the Environmental Law chapter of the 2022 edition of the D.C. Practice Manual. She is the recipient of an Excellence in Service Award from the Office of the District of Columbia Attorney General, and a Team Performance Award from the Maryland Department of the Environment for her work on a general permit for discharges of stormwater from construction activity.
Prof. DeWire earned her JD in 2007 from the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University. While at Pace, she was an Articles Editor of the Environmental Law Review, Vice President of the Environmental Law Society, and participated in the D.C. Environmental Externship course. Before law school, she received an Honors Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management from the University of Delaware.
