Biography

Adjunct Professor Richard Kissel is a founding member of Kissel Hirsch & Wilmer, and has represented the interests of insurers and reinsurers for over 30 years. Professor Kissel’s practice focuses on professional liability, with specific emphasis on lawyers', accountants', architects and engineers, Directors and Officers, corporate liability, Financial Institutions, miscellaneous E&O coverages, cyber liability, and general liability issues. His practice also focuses on reinsurance matters including coverage analysis, inspections/audits, and dispute resolution.

Much of Professor Kissel’s work has involved representation of various London, European, and Bermuda insurers and reinsurers, and he has served on several London Market panels focusing on complex claims related issues. As examples, Professor Kissel has worked on numerous high- profile cases, arising from the investment scandals of the 1980s, the Savings & Loan crisis, the corporate scandals of the 1990s, the tax strategy claims of the 2000s, and matters arising from the current economic climate and cyber issues.

For many years, Professor Kissel has served as an Adjunct Professor at Haub Law, teaching courses in Accounting for Lawyers and Insurance Law. He has also presented at various conferences and forums on issues vital to the insurance market and to industry groups.

Professor Kissel graduated with honors from Syracuse University College of Law, where he was on the Moot Court Board, for which he received various awards. He was also a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Legal Research and Writing. He graduated with honors from Boston University School of Management, where he majored in accounting.

Professor Kissel is a member of the Professional Liability Underwriting Society Insuralex, the Global Insurance Lawyers Group, and the American Bar Association.
