Social Justice Week

A week of engagement in honor of Danroy “DJ” Henry

Social Justice Week is a series of social justice-centered programs that will be offered on both the NYC and PLV campuses from Monday, October 26, through Friday, October 30. These week-long events are organized in memory of Pace student Danroy “DJ” Henry Jr. Created by students, faculty, staff, and alumni, this initiative has just one goal: to foster advocacy within us all. This starts with education, empowerment, and passion.

We are raising awareness for a variety of issues, but centering our whole week around the tragic loss of DJ Henry in 2010. To hear more about his story, we invite you to watch the video by the DJ Henry Dream Fund.

Description: In 2017 the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) received the Nobel Peace Prize for their advocacy for a treaty banning nuclear weapons. Description: Talking about issues related to race is difficult, particularly for White people. Because of the normativity of Whiteness, White people are often not aware of or confronted with issues regarding race unless they are very close with a person of color, or they see a crisis on the news. As the Black Lives Matter movement progresses and evolves, we see that White people can have a role in anti-racism by being willing to intentionally address issues of race with other White people.

This informational and interactive practice-based seminar will address this in two ways. First, we will discuss foundational issues regarding racial awareness and education, such as definition and clarification of terminology and common defense mechanisms, such as individualism, colorblindness, victimization, and the myth of meritocracy. We will discuss one of the proposed frameworks of racial self-awareness. Subsequently, participants will learn and practice strategies for engaging White people in conversations about race.

Faculty and staff members will find these discussions beneficial for and applicable to classroom and workspace conversations about race, either planned or unplanned. Students will find the material and strategies in this seminar useful for discussions about race with White family members and friends. Regardless of one’s intention or purpose for attending, both the information and applicable strategies discussed in this seminar will be valuable and constructive.

*The moderators of this seminar identify as White and are on their own journey of racial self-awareness and being anti-racist allies.

A truly transformative figure, Stevenson has represented prisoners on death row, including some who were wrongfully convicted. Description: For Fall 2020 HIS 196H "COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter: Comparative, Crisis-based Oral l History in the American Experience" is a civic engagement, public- history course that is studying the impact of the global pandemic COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter Movement through oral history interviews and comparative analysis of 20th and 21st Century American History. In this undergraduate research initiative students are conducting oral history interviews to generate original testimony and knowledge about COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter Movement for an archive and website that will be available to the Pace Community and the larger public. Students presenters will introduce the Pace COVID-19 and Back Lives Matter Oral History Project and highlight historical connections between disease and social unrest. Additionally, they will explain the importance of “crisis-based” oral history and public history, and will invite individuals to be interviewed. The interviews will be scheduled after Social Justice Week.

Description: New York City has a complicated history with water. We have built upon it, covered it up, and limited access to it to the hands of the highest bidder. This walking tour will take students, faculty, and staff on an exploration of the past, present, and future of water justice in lower Manhattan. We will visit key locations like the Collect Pond Park, once a 48-acre freshwater pond that provided drinking water and food to the Lenape people, which was polluted through early industry and then filled in in the 1800s, to become NYC’s first “environmental justice” community, known infamously as Five Points. We will learn about the history of the New York aqueduct system, which led to the destruction of over a dozen upstate communities to make way for a reservoir system that would supply the city with enough drinking water to continue to grow. And we will walk along the East River promenade, where millions of gallons of combined stormwater and raw sewage pour into the river annually in regular violation of the Clean Water Act. Finally, we will discuss key threats to public access and enjoyment of NYC’s waterfronts, including climate change, economic rezoning, and gentrification, and what waterfront-based organizations are doing to ensure that access to clean drinking water and “blue spaces” is a right for all New Yorkers.

Description: Academic spaces (K–12 or higher education) often place a great value on supposedly evidence-based practices, but this ignores the fact that traditional research doesn’t always reflect the priorities nor the realities of the populations they’re supposedly supporting. This results in the perpetuation of harmful practices that are directly or indirectly caused by racism, ableism, classism, queer- and trans-antagonism, monodialectalism/monolingualism, etc. In everything from accommodations statements to who appears in your syllabi or curricula (and more importantly- who’s notably missing), educators at all levels have a responsibility to listen to people with relevant lived experience, and legitimize that expertise.

This engaging presentation will use examples from the autistic community and the DisCrit framework to walk participants through their own biases and assumptions, and result in action items relevant for a variety of sphere of influences. Particularly relevant for anyone in the education and/or disability space.

Description: A Town Hall webinar created to promote awareness and engagement in healthy relationships while educating the Pace community about key facts surrounding sexual assault and domestic violence. I will be partnering with Patti Reyes D’Agostino (Manager, Development & Marketing PWJC) and Susan Carroll (Director of Training, Outreach & Education, PWJC) on behalf of the Pace Women’s Justice Center. The goal is to raise awareness about the realities of sexual assault and domestic violence among college students, as 18-24 represents the most common age when intimate partner violence is first experienced by women. The presentation will include clearly defining sexual assault and the varied elements of domestic violence, as well as the resources and recourses available to the Pace community locally and the impact under Title IX. It will focus on the promotion of healthy relationships in tandem with the facts about intimate partner violence, and where students who may be victims of these aggressions can go to seek help for themselves or others. The material of this event will centralize around teaching students how to identify and spot the warning signs of unhealthy relationship patterns, touching on the topics of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Domestic Violence (DV). We will outline concrete details about sexual assault and how it can occur in the course of many different types of relationships, while also highlighting the importance of consent. During this Town Hall discussion, PWJC will also explain their alliance with “NO MORE”, a global initiative campaign dedicated to end domestic violence and sexual assault by “increasing awareness, inspiring actions and fueling cultural change”. Students and staff will be introduced to the PWJC’s role within NO MORE and how they can also become involved in this movement to end society’s acceptance of domestic violence and sexual assault.

In this discussion we will be starting off with a poll about the value of education that the attendees received while they attended public or private school through elementary to high school. Description: Artist and publisher Kris Graves will present his influential work, A Bleak Reality, his extended work Testament Project, and most recent, monuments and memorials work in Richmond, Virginia. A Bleak Reality is a series of photographs made at the exact locations where police officers murdered unarmed black men. In the Testament Project, Kris explores through glowing portraits the re-conception of the contemporary black experience in America. Kris Graves creates artwork that deals with what he views wrong with American society and uses art to inform people about social issues. He also works to elevate the representation of people of color in the fine art canon; and create opportunities for conversation about race, representation, and urban life. This artist talk is also part of my ART255: Documentary Photography Course that introduces students to the practice and ideas of documentary photography by completing a photographic project. This course empowers independent visual storytelling on social issues that the students explore and self-published as a monograph.

Description: The work of a social justice activist is critically important – but it can also be exhausting, taking a toll on mental and physical health. In this session, we will collectively engage in activities and learn techniques to relax, recharge and restore, allowing you to care for yourself so you can continue to care for others and causes.

Sally Dickerson is a professor of psychology, an expert in the psychology of stress, and a certified yoga instructor (RYT-200) and breath coach. Dr. Sophie Kaufman is a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher and her research focuses on the intersection of mindfulness and cultural intelligence. In this hour-long workshop, Dr. Dickerson will lead a gentle yoga practice suitable for all levels of experience, with a focus on restorative postures. Dr. Kaufman will then teach several mindfulness meditation techniques, including awareness of breath and lovingkindness. There will be an emphasis on developing skills that you can practice on your own when you want to feel more calm, centered, and grounded.

It is personal and emotional writing without regard to writing conventions, like spelling, punctuation, and verb agreement. This writing simply expresses what is on your mind and in your heart. The connection between expressive writing and wellness was established by James Pennebaker, PhD, at the University of Texas at Austin. Pennebaker's research project has been replicated many times with positive outcomes.

Description: As our global community becomes more superdiverse and interconnected, so have the movements for social justice and racial equity. Many of us are eager to create conversations among diverse groups in which we can consider each other’s points of view, challenge assumptions, and foster curiosity. But we often find ourselves in need of new tools to do so. This experiential workshop will make use of tools of the theater, in particular improvisation, for developing emergent conversations that support inclusivity. We will engage in fun and playful activities which can expand our capacity to re-imagine and create new possibilities while ameliorating the stress and isolation that so many of us are experiencing today. The workshop facilitators have been practicing this approach to diversity and racial justice for the last two decades in a variety of communities as well as K - 12 and higher ed environments.

Description: Threat, Belonging, Values, The Leaky Pipeline of STEM: It has been known by Chemistry and Physics professors for the last 18 years that positive interventions in the beginning of college courses in their fields can prevent lower scores and dropouts from their minority students. Yet, we do not put that knowledge to use, and the leaky pipeline of STEM continues despite funding and programs that try different methods that do not succeed. STEM is intimidating to many minority students, who, despite having the ability to succeed, fall out of that pipeline because of self-doubt exacerbated by stereotypes, discrimination, and threats to their social identity within academia. Social identity threat thus causes a lacking connectedness to the overall group identity of the cohort, and furthers the student’s sense of isolation in the class. While these students may seek out online courses in order to protect themselves from identity threat present in the physical classroom, it is important that pervasive self-doubt caused by discrimination be addressed as it can continue to hinder the student’s success. Brief, non-invasive interventions can assist with removing the barriers between the student’s self-worth and the difficulties of the course. Virtual course setup can encourage positive group identity in an environment where discrimination based on gender, race and/or ethnicity does not bear the same effect as in the physical classroom. The difficulty in STEM is in part due to the issues of self-identity threat present in the classroom. The tested solution is to use thought exercises of common values with the group, which reduces threat feelings. This helps also reduce the attitude that one must be perfect, without mistakes, when learning STEM.

Description: As part of Pace University's Social Justice Week, Pleasantville’s Black Student Union (BSU) will host a memorial service in honor of Pace student and athlete, Danroy "DJ" Henry. The memorial event will include speakers, a time of reflection, words from DJ's friends and family, and the retirement of DJ's #12 jersey. Any non-Pace guests will not be permitted on campus, however, the event will be live streamed so that those who wish to see the event can have access to it. Please note: Any friends, family, or loved ones of DJ can utilize this form to share thoughts, words, and reflection. There will be a time during the event where we will read these words aloud. Due to heavy rain, the campus rally will be held Thursday, November 5, at 3:00 p.m. in Pace Stadium.

Description: Education has been billed as the great equalizer, the path to upward mobility, and more pointedly, the means to achieving the American dream. In this session we address two questions: First, is the vision of the American Dream reflective of all students’ experiences? Second, how do the structures and policies of schools limit attainment of this progress for some students? While each of us had unique experiences in schools, we have all experienced or witnessed the advantages given to some and roadblocks experienced by others. In this workshop we will look at our own experiences as well as research on this topic to understand more fully the myth of the American dream as it is enacted in schools. We will consider whether schools promote a particular point of view in areas such as curriculum, standardized testing, school discipline policies, labeling and tracking of children, teacher expectations, and inequities in school resources and funding. The format of the session will allow for personal reflection and sharing of individual experiences in schools, provide an overview of research and data on current educational practices and outcomes, and offer opportunity to collectively identify strategies to address inequities.
