Image Sizes and Naming Conventions

Web Image Checklist

Please follow these guidelines when preparing images for the site. Whenever possible, use photos from the Pace University stock photo catalog instead of generic stock images.

Your image is a .jpg file (preferably using Photoshop); no PNGs or GIFs.
Your image is less than 200 kb.
- To do this, save the image as optimized and reduce the quality setting until the file size is under 200kb — START AT 51% QUALITY (see screenshot below).
- If the image is already under 200kb at 51% quality, you're done — no need to increase the quality to get closer to the 200kb limit. A smaller file is always better for site performance, and an image at 51% quality looks nearly identical to one at 90%.
Your image is cropped and named according to the size and naming conventions below.
Your image file name is all-lowercase letters and hyphenated between words in the file names. Words shouldn't be bunched together.
Your image file name doesn't include spaces
Your image file name doesn't include special characters like an apostrophe or a plus symbol
Your image file name doesn't include a revision number or text such as "final-version"
Your alternative text is less than 100 characters
Your image isn't text based. In other words, don't place text in an image and then use that image on your page to display body copy.
Your image is high-quality.

Example:
If you were creating a hero image for an Article titled "Staff Picnic", you would name your image article-hero-staff-picnic.jpg.

Example:
If you were creating a hero image for an Event titled "Staff Picnic", you would name your image event-hero-staff-picnic.jpg.

Example:
If you were creating an image for a home page carousel titled "Staff Picnic", on a college webpage (ie. Lubin), you would name your image lubin-homepage-hero-staff-picnic.jpg.

[school-or-department]-interior-hero-[name-of-page].jpg
Example:
If you were creating a hero image for a Landing Page or Left Navigation Page titled "Staff Picnic", on a University Relations webpage, you would name your image university-relations-interior-hero-staff-picnic.jpg

Example:
If you were creating an image for a 50/50 Split CTA component titled "Staff Picnic", on a University Relations webpage, you would name your image university-relations-5050-staff-picnic.jpg
Image Size:
1800x[no height specification] pixels
Image Naming Convention:
[school-or-department]-5050-[name-of-5050-section].jpg
Example:
If you were creating an image for a 50/50 logo component titled to highlight another university you were partnered with on a University Relations page, Rutgers for example, you would name your image university-relations-5050-rutgers-logo.jpg

2000x1125 pixels
Image Naming Convention:
[school-or-department]-full-width-[title-of-component].jpg
Example:
If you were creating an image for a Full-Width Image with Text component titled "Staff Picnic", on a University Relations webpage, you would name your image university-relations-full-width-staff-picnic.jpg.

1600x900 pixels
Image Naming Convention:
[department-or-school]-image-gallery-[title-or-subject-of-gallery]-[#-of-image].jpg
Example:
If you were creating an image for a gallery titled "Staff Picnic", on a University Relations webpage, you would name your first gallery image university-relations-image-gallery-staff-picnic-1.jpg
Image Size:
975x975 pixels
Image Naming Convention:
[school-or-department]-inline-[description-of-image].jpg
* Images of this type may not always be 975x975 squares. If your image is not a square, please make sure that the width is 975.
Example:
If you were creating an image to be placed floated left or right of your body copy next to a page section titled "Staff Picnic", on a University Relations webpage, you would name your image university-relations-inline-staff-picnic.jpg

* Images of this type may not always be 2000x1125 rectangles. If your image is not a rectangle, please make sure that the width is 2000.
