This course provides an overview of the various regulations that apply to the issuance and trading of cryptocurrency and other digital assets. This course begins with an overview of blockchain and cryptocurrency. The course then provides background on trading and settlement processes for traditional asset classes such as equities and compares these processes to the processes used for trading cryptocurrencies and settling cryptocurrency transactions. After providing this background, the course focuses on different digital asset products and the regulations that are applicable to the trading of those products. This part of the course starts with spot trading in cryptocurrency and proceeds to cover other products such as margin trading in cryptocurrency, digital assets that are securities, initial coin offerings, stablecoins, DeFi (decentralized finance), futures on cryptocurrency, and ETFs. The course covers U.S. CFTC and SEC regulations, federal banking regulations and state regulations. This course is relevant not just for students who are interested in the regulation of cryptocurrency and other digital assets but also for students who are interested in financial services regulation more generally.
