Deepen Your Understanding of the Law
Graduate programs at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University offer students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of their chosen areas of law, while at the same time learning the skills necessary to put their new knowledge to work. Our programs attract lawyers of demonstrated intellectual and academic excellence from all over the world, exposing them to a rich educational experience in the American legal system and providing the tools necessary for professional success, whether in the practice of law, public service or academia.
We offer leading Master of Laws (LLM) programs in environmental law and comparative legal studies, as well as a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) in environmental law. JD candidates may enroll in a dual JD/LLM program in environmental law, in which they can earn the LLM degree in as little as one additional semester.
The Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University is accredited by the American Bar Association and the New York State Department of Education. All LLM programs and the SJD program have received acquiescence from the American Bar Association.

At Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, we are especially proud of our LLM in Environmental Law. Our law school was one of the first in the United States to develop a comprehensive, integrated curriculum in environmental law, and our faculty in this area is recognized at the worldwide level. Our Environmental Law Program is consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top environmental law programs in the nation.
The LLM program is just one expression of our commitment to ensure the sustainability of our natural and built environments. The program prepares our graduates to address the scientific, economic and political forces that shape environmental law, and to work for outcomes that balance often competing interests in the protection of our natural surroundings and promotion of intelligent and sustainable development.
Students may choose from over 40 environmental courses offered each year, and may participate in ongoing political, economic and social research conducted by our internationally renowned faculty. Within the LLM in Environmental Law, students may choose optional specializations in Global Environmental Law, Climate Change Law or Land Use and Sustainable Development Law.

The LLM in Comparative Legal Studies welcomes non-US trained lawyers seeking greater knowledge of US law and the US legal system. Globalization of the legal profession in recent years makes it even more important for international lawyers to have a working knowledge of the US system, in order to effectively work on behalf of clients in an increasingly transnational legal environment.
Our program begins with an introduction to US legal principles and methods which builds on the student’s experience in his or her home jurisdiction, focusing on how the US legal system fits within a comparative and international legal framework. Students may choose courses in specialized areas of US law, including public or private international law, intellectual property, dispute resolution, business transactions or international human rights. They may also choose an optional specialization in International Business Law.

Aspiring legal scholars and teachers may apply to the SJD, or Doctor of Juridical Science, Program in Environmental Law. The SJD is a research-oriented degree program intended to guide new scholars through the process of writing and publishing a doctoral dissertation that creates original knowledge in a specific area of environmental law. Students in the SJD program work closely with their faculty supervisors on their dissertation, which they must defend before a faculty panel as the final step in completing their doctorate. Admission to this program is highly competitive.

Lina Arboleda, LLM ’23: A Global Pathway to Immigration Law
With a desire to fully understand the US legal system, Lina Arboleda applied to the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University to pursue her LLM in Comparative Legal Studies. She shares that she was particularly impressed by a law school named after a woman and the legacy of Elisabeth Haub. “As a woman and Latina, I know how difficult it is for women to open paths and advocate for good causes,” said Lina. During her time at Haub Law, Lina appreciated the diversity at the Law School. “Haub Law embraces diversity; the students, professors, and administrative staff always made me feel welcome.”
Daniel Castelo Branco Ramos, SJD '21: A Crucial Degree
As a federal judge in Brazil, Daniel Castelo Branco Ramos describes the SJD program at Haub Law as one of the toughest intellectual and personal tasks of his life, he is very cognizant of the importance of the end result. “I work with environmental litigation and teach environmental law,” said Judge Ramos. “The knowledge that I acquired during my SJD studies was crucial both in solving practical day-to-day issues and in deepening my legal thinking and research. Additionally, being immersed in a learning environment with a social and legal culture so different from the one I was used to was invaluable.”
