Professor Noa Ben-Asher delivered the James D. Hopkins Professor of Law lecture on Wednesday, October 26, on "Gender Identity, the New Legal Sex." Dean Horace Anderson appointed Professor Ben-Asher as the James D. Hopkins Professor of Law for the 2021-2023 term. During the holder's term, the James D. Hopkins Professor delivers a lecture that is open to the entire law school community and members of the public.

Lisa Denig has dedicated much of her career to pioneering Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Initiatives within the New York State Court System. Recently, Lisa started a new position as Principal Settlement Coordinator for the 9th Judicial District within the New York State Unified Court System. “I am tasked with creating and expanding opportunities for ADR in all the courts in the 9th JD,” said Lisa. “Not long ago, settlement or mediation were thought of as secondary to years of discovery, enormous cost outlays, and time spent on trial preparation. That is no longer the case. Today, attorneys come prepared-at the preliminary conference - to discuss alternative ways to resolve their case. Alternative dispute resolution is not the wave of the future, it is the present.”

The Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University is pleased to announce that Erin Gleason Alvarez has joined the faculty as an adjunct professor and Director of the Mediation Practicum, in which students are trained to serve as mediators in small claims disputes. Gleason Alvarez is an arbitrator, mediator, and negotiation consultant. She is a member of the American Arbitration Association Commercial Arbitration Panel, the CPR Institute Panel of Distinguished Neutrals, and Resolute Systems New York and National Mediation Panels. Gleason Alvarez also will conduct mediation trainings for the broader Haub Law community.

The fact that the Trump Organization kept making off-the-books payments for so many years could help prosecutors show it intended to violate tax laws, a key element of proving its guilt to the jury, said Bridget Crawford, a law professor at Pace University in New York focusing on income tax and corporations. "Failure to report once might be a mistake. Failure to report over a period of time is fraud," Crawford added. "If you know of your tax obligations - which all experienced and savvy people do - and consciously disregard them, that is intent to defraud the government."

Vanessa Merton, who directs the Immigration Justice Clinic at Pace University’s School of Law, said Republicans had spent decades opposing “obvious common-sense and popular moves” such as institutionalizing DACA or expanding the number of work visas for immigrant healthcare workers as well as child- and elder-care providers. “Any move the Biden Administration makes to ameliorate conditions for migrants (and in reality for all of us – our economy would benefit substantially from increased migration and workers at this time) is immediately denounced as ‘open borders’ and supporting ‘the invasion,’” she wrote in an email.

The Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University has announced that the 2022 Elisabeth Haub Award for Environmental Law and Diplomacy will be awarded to Professor Paulo de Bessa Antunes, an environmental scholar and leading professor of environmental law at Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, and head of the Environmental Practice of Campos Mello Advogados (Brazil). Professor de Bessa Antunes was also a Haub Visiting Scholar at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law in the spring of 2019.
